Diversified Industrials
Industrial businesses are broad by nature.
Our work spans manufacturing, engineering, fabrication, equipment, services and other businesses operating in complex industrial environments.
The common thread is usually the same.
These businesses need people who understand how commercial decisions translate into operational outcomes.
We work from Board and executive appointments through to operational, functional and technical management.
The Market
There is no single industrial talent market.
A manufacturer, engineering services business and equipment supplier may operate in similar customer markets but need very different people.
Ownership matters too.
Listed businesses, private companies, multinationals and founder-led organisations can each place different demands on their leaders.
We try to understand those differences before beginning a search.
Our Approach
We look for people who understand both sides of an industrial business.
The commercial realities and the operational ones.
That may mean looking within the immediate sector. It may also mean considering someone from an adjacent industry where the underlying experience translates well.
We research broadly, then assess carefully against the situation in front of us.
The Roles
Our industrials work spans:
Board & Executive
Chair, Non-Executive Director, CEO, Managing Director and executive leadership.
Projects & Operations
General Managers, Operations Managers, Project Managers and other operational leadership.
Functional & Technical
Commercial, finance, people, engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, technology and specialist management.
Leadership Advisory
Succession, talent mapping, assessment and market intelligence.
The title is only part of the brief. We are more interested in what the person needs to deliver.
Case Studies
Selected searches led by our principals
-
A global industrial services business needed leadership for a highly technical division. Heat treatment is specialist work, and the pool of people who understand the process and can run a business unit around it is small.
The search couldn't trade one for the other. A capable commercial manager without the technical grounding wouldn't hold credibility with the team or the client. A technical specialist without commercial judgement wouldn't hold the margin.
Delivery carried the weight, tested against technical depth rather than general operational experience.
-
A private equity owner and the board of a shutdown and maintenance business had a chief executive in mind. What they wanted was to be sure.
We ran the candidate through the same process any shortlisted candidate goes through. Interview against the brief, assessment under the Leadership Compass, and referencing conducted personally and in depth. Alongside it we mapped the market at that level, so the board could see what else existed rather than assuming.
The appointment went ahead. The difference is that it went ahead on evidence rather than conviction, which is what a board and an owner need when they're the ones accountable for it.
-
A specialist robotics business needed a Director of Operations. The field is narrow. Very few people have run operations in subsea robotics, so the search had to look at leaders from adjacent technical environments and work out which of them would transfer.
Assessment carried more weight than usual because the sector experience wasn't there to lean on. The question was whether someone could pick up an unfamiliar technical domain fast enough to lead in it, which is a judgement about the person rather than their history.
The appointment was made last year. The client has since engaged us again.
